I saw most of this movie on the SAA flight from Joberg to NYC. THe plane landed before it ended so I am looking to get a copy to watch it properly — the screen was not ideal on the plane.

I found it funny and interesting. It was great to see this country that is so powerful but hidden mostly from US audiences. I was intrigued by the almost documentary exposure of the place and the people. Characters were a bit over top at times yet interesting because of their absurdity.

I fell in love with District 9 and wanted to see more of the joberg scene.

This movie was terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! upon exiting the cinema I considered asking for a refund. The plot was super weak and very shallow, nothing original and far from intelligent or even witty. and seriously, the taxi scene? seriously. he befriends the feather duster guy for a few inconsiderable moments, gets into a taxi fulledwith the less fortunate, they all have a laugh and thats it, thats how it ends? it feels like i’m taking crazy pills or something. and the deus ex machina, they took to a level above the level all of you have always thought was impossible to attain.

and worst part, there are no bad reviews. even Tonight gave it a decent review.

anyway enjoy epic movie or whatever youre deciding to watch today

loved this movie. great review, andy. also want to see it again. think the cast and script did a great job. soundtrack is awesome, and is released by next music – will be in stores soon (no, i don’t work for them!) if you havent gone to see it, please do. lets convince the public that SA comedy isnt just schucks its fuckwit…please?

I saw Jozi last night in Pretoria. I liked it. It was one of the first South African movies to not wallow in the darkness (Tsotsi-like) too much nor to stay behind the suburban trenches (Schuster-like) too much . It’s funniest moments came by just showing the oddities of Joburg reality – which, yes, are complicated – but also hilarious.

The sad part was that we were almost alone in the cinema (Nu-Metro Hatfield), and that it was shown in the tiniest of the theaters. It seems that cinemas just assume from the start that South African films will be bumped-off by Hollywood slop within the first week – And that being to my mind the first film in a while with some grasp of our reality.

Has anyone noticed how that first photo bears a striking but offbeat resemblance to the cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”?

Shit I’m relieved you enjoyed it. I had such a blast watching it, but couldn’t help thinking – all the way through – that the man sitting in front of me would revue the movie and, potentially, write it off.
