The Protection of Information Bill is the biggest threat to a democratic, free and transparent South Africa since the arrival of democracy. If the Bill is signed into law it gives the government sweeping new powers to classify a whole bunch of information that is currently not secret. It also makes it illegal to leak or publish information deemed classified by the government. And should you break this law, the offence is punishable by imprisonment.
