isPantsula Roots Mixtape

by Kimon de Greef / 31.05.2013

To get you in the mood for tomorrow’s battle, start your day with some vintage sounds from the SA township dance scene from 1960 til around 1980. This is the stuff that eventually led to those trademark epileptic ispantsula moves. Genres span jazz, mbaqanga, disco, jive and mgqashiyo. Together they forged an iconic sound that later emerged in bubblegum, the pantsula dance movement, kwaito and house. Some recordings on this mixtape have been ripped from old vinyl complete with heavy crackle and hiss. Watch out for the Windows alarm sound halfway through – this glitch must have happened while some unknown aficionado was converting his collection to digital. Enjoy the sharp brass notes, deep bass grooves, tight drumbeats and unmistakeable vocal harmonies of this most South African selection.
