Love, Truth & Music17.02.2014
Spreading creativity. That is the noble aim of Design Indaba Music 2014 when they put on 2 days of free music performances at venues across the Mother City. A wave of talented South African musicians are set to break on the city’s shores, but our personal pick has got to be Bongeziwe Mabandla.
The singer-songwriter’s tale is that classic story of the boy from a small-town (Tsolo, outside Umtata in the Eastern Cape, to be exact), whose passion for music and the courage to chase a dream led to him making it big.
His chance collaboration with drummer Paulo Chibanga led to the creation of his debut album Umlilo, which notched up two MTN South African Music Awards and saw him compared to visionaries such as Vusi Mahlasela and Tracy Chapman. Despite the acclaim, and his striking falsetto voice, it’s the humble and authentic presentation of his Afro-folk music which makes him stand out.
Love, truth, and music; all three are free.
