Da L.e.s’s All White Party, an annual event premised around the rapper’s desire to keep in touch and celebrate with his industry friends, happened at his house in the Nothern suburbs of Johannesburg recently. ‘Surely beautiful women will abound’, we said facing each other as we searched for parking by the roadside. ‘Surely they won’t mind that we’re not dressed in white’, we asserted in a vain re-assuring ourselves as we approached the entrance. Barely a few minutes inside the mansion, a short, burly braase from the Cape Flats who gave pounds to everyone grabbed us by the arm. We tried resisting, but then noticed the red stains his crisp, white golf shirt. Suffice to say, it’s not safe to resist contact with a person with a strong grip, tatoos on their forearms, and bloodstains on their shirt. However, he sorted us out with white wife beaters and quickly sent us back to the important task of capturing the lives and times of Jozi ballers and hangers-on.
