The Game Changerby Lindokuhle Nkosi / 20.03.2012
Notorious B.I.G, Frank Sinatra, Jay Z and Bob Dylan have all at some point in time, penned an ode to the Big Apple. The city seems to inspire poetry, validity, credibility. Something about the redbrick buildings in Brooklyn and the skyscrapers in Manhattan. Something about the pace, the constant rush. And that incessant beat has attraced the nomadic Red Bull Music Academy to the concrete jungle this year. And you could be invited. The Red Bull Music Academy is like a travelling world series of inspirational music industry talks and workshops, a platform, or a leg up, for those who want to make a difference in today’s musical landscape. For the chosen few, it’s an all expenses paid, two-week acceleration into the music biz. Imagine a full suite of professional music studios to play in, workshops, collaborations and daily lectures from music industry heavyweights like Prince Paul, Goldie, Bob Moog and Chuck D just to get you into it… They keep the list of guests lecturers a tightly guarded secret but check out last year’s glittering line-up of Erykah Badu, Bootsy Collins and Frankie Knuckles, to name but a few, and you’ll begin to understand the pedigree of this experience.
As the Academy brochure says: “To join this journey, you don’t need to be able to play violin at Grade 8 level, name all the members of the Wu-Tang backwards or know how to disassemble an SP-1200 using only a dime and a toothpick. What we are looking for is passion for learning and sharing, enthusiasm for music across genres, and a truly global, open-minded outlook.”
So here’s the thing. Time is running out. You have until the 2nd of April to get your application in. All you need to do is a) love music b) fill in the form and c) attach a demo of your stuff. The demo needs to showcase your skills and talents. Keep it succinct and on point. It should consist of the five or six songs that show you at your best. You can be a songwriter, an instrumentalist or even a producer. Send your information directly through the website, or find the Mr X in your city if you need a hand.
