Hey, I was there : SA’s biggest concert ever! Glorious memories…..
Some of us got left behind afterwards, missed our bus back to Vereeninging.
Ended up at Ellis Park station @ 2am when a freight train carrying sand offered us a lift to Germiston station. Caught a train home later that morning. Never forget it!

I disagree bands are making music that they love. Why should they falsify their sound simply to be recognizable with other African music? Music is not about your roots but expression/ If every band went about reflecting their countries sound there wouldn’t be passion.

Great piece, I wish I was around then.

I wish South African bands, especially the white ones, would embrace the African sound into their music. A record producer from the USA or UK would never sign a band from South Africa, if they could get the same product in their back garden (unless the band in question were DAMN good). If they can’t get an African sound from us then they’ll just do it themselves – Vampire Weekend’s latest album Contra did exceptionally well on the American charts and its full of South African pop drum beats and textures. It’s inspiring to see what the forgotten legacy of SA music was about, hopefully in the future we’ll see more local identity in our music.
