Eddie Should Know Better

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 by Andy Davis
Twiggy Will Go Back in September we ran an article about how the most prestigious event in the world of big wave surfing, the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, long the preserve of American and the odd Australian surfers, was about to open up their doors to the legion of South African big wave surfers, who rank among the best in the world but are consistently left out in the cold. ...read more

Drifting Along

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 by Craig Jarvis
The Drifter The ASP has had the injury wildcard for a number of years, but the jury is still out as to whether they always use it fairly. When Rob Machado was injured in 2001 with a broken wrist, it was assumed that he would get the injury wildcard. He had been a runner-up in the world title race a few years earlier, and had consistently placed high in pro events the world over. ...read more

Subtropicalia

Monday, October 12th, 2009 by Andy Davis
Subtropicalia A while back the artist Paul Edmunds contacted us at Mahala and asked if we have any old, ruined wetsuits to spare for one of his projects. I was incredulous. Of course we did. As you know, part of Mahala Surf Co’s work is to collect and distribute second hand surf equipment to underprivileged communities. We get a lot of wetsuits. Some of them are really crummy. ...read more

Friday, July 31st, 2009 by Brendon Bosworth
Dancing with a Beast After 10 years that crazy dance with mother nature known as the Red Bull Big Wave Africa, is no longer. After a decade, Red Bull has put the event back on the shelf. In a sense, the genesis of this contest is a script in itself. ...read more

Blame it on the Boogie!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 by Craig Jarvis
Blame it on the Boogie Dane Reynolds is the future of professional surfing. That’s what every media platform is shouting about right now. He has the flair, the talent, the attitude, the intelligence and, apparently, the looks as well. Last year things were a bit different. ...read more

Another day in J-Bay

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 by Craig Jarvis
Sean Holmes It’s hard to dig for dirt when the best right hand point break in the world is going completely off its tits. Lifetime enemies start hugging on the beach, grudges are forgotten, everyone is buying everyone else a cup of coffee ...read more

Hey J-Bay

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by Craig Jarvis
Hey J-Bay It’s that time of the year again when the travelling circus known as the World Championship Tour of Surfing sets up camp in J-Bay. You can expect sponsored man-children behaving badly, looser than average groupies, snooty surf wannabes, posers, gangsters, pros, surf-obsessed families with dogs, egos, chest thumping, calamari ...read more

Give ‘em enough Dope

Monday, May 25th, 2009 by Dylan Muhlenberg
Give 'em enough Dope I was walking down the Sea Point promenade with my girl and the golden retriever that we were dog sitting when I noticed an angry man staring daggers at me from afar. He walked towards me and then stopped directly in front of me, all the time staring at my shirt.  I was bemused, cocking my head to the side with a furrowed brow. He said, ‘Do you know who that is on your shirt?’ I said, ‘Er, yah, it’s, ...read more
