In the Phantom of the Opera, Christine Daae is seduced by a spectral voice she believes to be the prophesised ‘angel of music’. He turns out to be a guy who hangs in the basement of the Paris Opera House. Upon this realisation, Christine utters the now famous line, “The Phaaaaantom of the Opera is here, inside my mind.”
Driving along a rain-soaked M3 on the way to the Artscape, Jack and Adam let the Phantom enter their minds.

Muammar Ghaddafi (untrue, she says), Osama bin Laden (her story vascillates between being kept as a sex slave against her will, and admitting to being his mistress), Benjamin Netanyahu (she denies this), Sudanese opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi, Bobby Mugabe (just friends) and most recently our very own dancing president, the right honourable Jacob Zuma.

The 21 year Khayelitsha resident is a professional adventurer with an impressive list of achievements under his belt already. At the age of 17 he got a taste for adventure sailing a tall ship across the Atlantic. Since then he’s set his sights on climbing 7 of the world’s scariest mountains. He summited Kilimanjaro in November last year and Mount Elbrus in Russia, just last month.

I feel like Pacman navigating through the mess of bodies, smoke and lasers – all framed by a dark backdrop of refuse bags lining the walls. The DJ seems at home, and so he should, this is his actual home, but for all intents and purposes I’m in a dingy club.
