Night of the Side Projects

One novel concept deserves another. Last week five of Cape Town’s more established bands: Bateleur, Beach Party, Christian Tiger School, Beatenberg and Voicetag / Bteam got together to showcase their side projects at a kitsch nightclub in the city. So we sent Hugh Upsher along to draw the review.

that last graph is probably the best snapshot of a gig review ever.

It’s a very creative way to make such reviews, but you must be careful not to kill it by posting picture reviews every week.

Only a member of the ‘mahala-high-5-brigade’ would find this ‘interesting’…

  12. JNN says:

Thanks for yet another predictable review Mahala.
I tip my hat to the organisers of Wrestlemania, who worked hard to do something fresh. If you had paid attention you may have realised why shades-mid-set was a funny and endearing moment, because the musicians took what mattered seriously – the music. That’s more than I can say for this article.

  13. Andy says:

thanks JNN for your earnest and yet disaffected hipsterism. But why are you so upset with this article. It’s hardly critical.

cnut ya big douche bag! where you been?

  14. Matthew Freemantle says:

Andy, it is precisely the fact that the ‘review’ is ‘hardly critical’ that is upsetting. To understand criticism as only negative is an error, but to say neither why it was good or bad is even worse.

  15. Hugh says:

I believe my graph explains that it was good at the beginning at at the end due to certain ‘critical’ factors that I detailed within.

Also, I personally feel terrible about not understanding the ‘funny and endearing moment’

I’m sure it was very funny and endearing to his immediate circle of friends.

  16. Andy says:

look we’ve literally done thousands of gig reviews over the years and we’ve always aimed to be both relevant and critical (good and bad). JNN seemed upset and defensive and i feel that’s not a warranted reaction. These pictorial reviews offer quirky snapshots of moments at an event that offer something different, ranging from poignant to peripheral. It’s just something fresh. Don’t overthink it.

The organisers of wrestlemania worked real hard. They booked a venue. Someone made a flyer. I tip my hat too.

you obviously do that stuff all the time. Good on you. I bet you know all the risks and complications of setting up an event. I tip my hat to you.

all this hipster rage is hard to fathom. go check out the issues on Avaaz guys. More NB shit to click to…

  20. Dplanet says:

Haha. Andy – you can’t post a review with a comments section and they tell people who comment to go somewhere else ‘more NB’. Besides, I like hipster rage.

Drawn reviews are clearly the way forward.

  22. Boopin McDad says:

    Yoh, this is tedious.
Firstly, LET’S JUST LOVE EACH OTHER, DUDES – and concede that it’s silly to have an agressive stance on whether a humorous pictorial review is just or not.
However, fuck calling someone a hipster to negate their grievances you lazy bird.

I enjoyed this review, but was annoyed by the it’s unwavering shortsightedness – it would be nice for a change to see positivity and sincere effort reciprocated with a little less determination to be purely cynical. But then again, I suppose this is why people come here and leave the gushy plumbing to LMG.

These drawing look like they where done by a kid, but this is funny. Why point out all the Negative aspects about the night, there was so much good that came out of the night.
