Electric Cityby Nina Zillah Bekink / 06.08.2013
Last Friday night we sent Johannesburg based photographer and DJ Nina Zillah Bekink to the Puma Social Club. After studying Journalism and Politics at Rhodes, Nina worked at The Times newspaper for two years while she pursued her advanced photographic diploma at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown. These photos will form part of a bigger body of work, Electric City, which looks at Johannesburg as a vibrant contrasting social, political, and geographical landscape. Jozi claims to be the ‘lightning capital of the world’, being one of the most ‘struck’ districts on the planet. Beautiful thunder storms hug the city summers and the kinetic, potential and surging energies of the heavens radiate through the streets and night life of this cosmopolitan melting point. Violent, ruthless, bursting with life and humanity, Johannesburg is the African capital that celebrates both its downfall as well as its hope for redemption. Here’s what went down at lightning city’s Social Club.
